It’s a cold, cold night. The wind is whistlin’ through the pines, streamers of snow are whisping down the empty streets to and fro. The season is a changin’.

I’m not just talking about seasons of weather but rather about seasons of life. I have often attempted to stay in seasons of my life for as long as I possibly could, whether this be not wanting to get older, graduate from high school or college, or move to a new town. Even though I resisted change, I sought happiness in changes within these seasons. I believed that every place was better than where I physically was, so I stayed diligent in my quest, traveling and seeking — chasing after the wind, so to speak.

I am so grateful to have had the wonderful opportunity over the last ten years to not only travel around the U.S. but also travel to other countries — even live and volunteer in Sarajevo, Bosnia for five months — experiences that molded these beliefs into an unexpected form, contentment.

I can’t explain the stories of Bosnia in this column, but I can explain that most of the people there don’t even have the freedom to leave their country (except to Croatia to swim once or twice a year - if they can afford it). There are bullet and shell holes in almost every building there, and people often wait years to get a job volunteering somewhere, in hopes that it may turn into a job that pays a monthly wage that is equivalent to what many here spend at the bar on a weekend.

Do people here suffer? Absolutely. Am I talking directly about Bosnia or Europe? No, but rather about being happy with the current season or situation. It could be worse.

I learned that I have nothing concrete to complain about, as long as there is something to eat and a roof to help me stay dry and warm — especially if I have loved ones nearby. I need to be grateful for what I have, my lot.

I learned that what matters is often just as green “there” as it is “here” — that happiness and personal fulfillment comes from within. I saw and learned that WE all live generally the same in respect to basic things.

People eat, sleep, work (in most places), spend time with family and friends and seek to find their place in the world, to survive. What is new always becomes “old” and routines are everywhere. And where we live, what color we are, what we believe, or what we wear or drive is completely meaningless when it comes to interactions with one another, because we are all really just trying to survive and adapt to our physical environment. Variety is what makes life beautiful.

Oh, maybe I have ruffled some feathers. This is okay; reaction means caring, and it’s better to care about something than nothing.

I’m not trying to teach some in-depth philosophical jargon. I’m saying that after all of the places I have been, and after all of the personal challenges I have embarked upon, I realize that this place, Minnesota, the Iron Range, is a good place to live. It’s where I’m at.

The people here are kind and generous, real; the air is clean; the water is good; there is no war, hurricanes, floods, or mass strife. It’s quiet. It’s nice. We can walk our streets at night and see the stars. We get to smell chimney smoke on cold winter nights, and we can swim in the lakes and rivers on hot summer days.

Family, friends, and just plain being kind to people are the most important things. Everything else is just busy work, in my opinion.

This is another season for me — a season to return “home” and be happy with where I am, because I know it’s where I am supposed to be. And this season will change too, but I’m okay with this.

Well just think last year at this time it was a free for all for overtime and taking all the verbal abuse you could stand from customers looking for that damn skyscout!! But what a great feeling getting those paychecks where your commission was more than your hourly. But life here @ the Sheraton is really different than last year, but the verbal abuse from customers didnt go away especialy from Hotwire and priceline guest.(there my favorite) So stop on in and try our new dinning room because we now have Bob Bennett from Fitgers here as our senior executive chef.

    Later,

As the newest (probably) transplant to Duluth, Im not too well connected. Can someone recommend a company or individual who does carpet repair? My dog dug it up in a couple areas and ate the fibers. Thankfully, he evacuated all. I also need the carpet cleaned from his mouse poison regurgitation episode a year ago. Any steers in a helpful direction would be appreciated.
